I can’t speak to the costs, or whether something is too expensive. But sneaking in seems unethical to me, especially when you could have just as easily paid the entrance fee.
What is particularly sad about your experience is it seems virtually all political conventions are like this one. Apart from promoting the cult of the leader don't see what the point of these conventions is.
