I attended a Black Canadian Music History talk given by Carlos Morgan at Kitchener Public Library earlier this month. It was eye-opening and it was sad. In 2021 and 2022, I listened to a massive tonne of music by many, many, many Black artists (largely American, largely from the 80s and 90s) and a lot of music by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan & Party. I was suffering from a lifetime of abuse and trauma, trying to recover my humanity and (re)educate myself. The white supremacist tactic of leaving out the music of any marginalized group seems to have had a detrimental impact on this country's maturity - people seem stuck at a high school level of maturity, a deficiency which seems to be compensated for by dogma, privilege, product & services. Allowing for the love & truth of suffering people to be expressed and known builds maturity, Canada has failed to a point where many people, myself included, ignore everything here and look to amazing work and achievements taking place all over the world.
