Great commentary. So sorry that it's personal. Cumulatively everything you've gone through also saps up your precious energy, causes stress which even if you're managing can't be good for your health (or mood!) Private US insurance companies have a role in the demise of Canada's Health Care system. They've been a predatory force for decades, circling around a mostly healthy, educated population of passive white-ish folks (that don't talk back) to grab more and more of them away into the fold of 'better' private care. But maybe that's small potatoes compared to the role of the anti-medicare National Citizens Coalition once led by Stephen Harper who then led Canada. Or was it mis-led?
Yes. We urgently need these critiques. Under Santé Quebec these services have been a shitshow. And Genevieve Biron at the helm is an absolutr travesty. Gemini constantly suggests I get blood tests at Biron labs due to the mess. And their accountancy minded bean counting does not account for actual life, needs, well being or equity. It’s just devastating—and chaos across the board.
Worrisome for sure. And if it is so for me, a white, educated, semi-retired individual with some modest savings, I can only begin to imagine the experience for folks without my privilege. Courage to you Nora...and all of us.
Meanwhile, not a peep about the Alberta medicare privatization racket out of recently elected Liberal MP Dr. Danielle Martin, one of the founders of Canadian Doctors for Medicare. Martin's Instagram still has the video clip of her defending Canadian healthcare in her 2014 testimony before the U.S. Congress which she put up during the byelection campaign, accompanied by her vow: "it is a fight I will continue to take up in Ottawa" (https://www.instagram.com/doc.daniellemartin/reel/DWPElX3ETKC/?hl=en).
When doctors and other healthcare professionals are not of any community and instead exist as their own silo of privilege, unconcerned about any effect of their supposed healthcare—concerned only about not losing their jobs, then what really prevents them from operating essentially as an eugenicist cult.
When healthcare does not need to exist, only a bare-minimum effort towards ensuring that the units of labor exploitation & extraction can submit to the exploitation & extraction, why bother with healthcare? Force medications into everyone when there are easy profits to be made, ignore the suffering otherwise. If they can get to a job, any job regardless of their actual skills/talents/abilities/desire to learn & skill themselves, who cares? If they don't want to submit to labor extraction & exploitation, submit them to decades of various forms of torture and toss them onto the eugenics of enforced legislative poverty, such as ODSP, (if they haven't died before that) and then exploit & extract from them permanently until death.
Canada doesn't have professions. Canada doesn't have jobs. Canada doesn't have careers. All of this is a massive stuntshow which benefits only whites & whiteness. Humanity is illegal in Canada and thus has not been developed, humanity is extracted and consumed from those who actually know what it is and how to get there and those who consume engage in performative stunts with no substance, value, or consequence.
There is no 'left' here and there will never be until one of the most basic fundamentals which has been taken for granted, humanity itself, is thoroughly understood and applied by those of us who see no worth or value in living a life of transactions & consumption.
If I am to never be anywhere near my own intact basic humanity as a child or as an adult, what worth does any degree, any job, any career, any money, any property, any "power", any form of privilege hold?

WOW. What a hassle/shitshow. Thank you for writing about it.

Of course, since her victory ... crickets.
i feel your frustration and appreciate you expressing it. the message of enshitification of our public health care needs to be heard.
Garage sale, the perfect analogy of stealth privatization. Bonne vacance!
And here I thought Ontario ànd Alberta had to be the worst
