Sirius XM formally announced their new Canada Talks line-up this week and look, Sandy and Nora is there! Catch us at 4:00 PM on Sirius XM Channel 167.
Today, Quebec City celebrates St. Patrick’s Day. Sure, it’s late. But it’s always late. It’s the only way to ensure that we get three police pipe and drum bands to the annual parade.
I want to make a sign that says something like, “please don’t invade us” and sign it ACAB or whatever. But to hold it up, I would have to be sly. The fools who think that now, of all years and of all moments, is the time to welcome law enforcement from the United States might read this and realize that they look like fools. And Quebec City’s Anglo community is too small for me to have any more enemies.
But still, it is foolish, in a moment where Canadians want to go Elbows Up (accidentally wrote elblows up which I think is more active and poetic), Buy Canadian, Do Not Annex Us Mr. Trump, etc., that we would be welcoming US cops to a city that the Americans have already laid siege on. Sure, that was hundreds of years ago and sure, we have all certainly moved on. But … have we?
Each year, I’ve wanted to protest this silly ritual. I’ve thought about writing names of people who the Chicago or NY police departments have killed on cardboard to hold up as they march by. But, I never have. Too much to hold with a beer in my hand.
This year though, maybe I’ll get the courage to actually do it. Especailly since cops love Trump. Officially, the national police union endorsed him. So did many police forces across the US, including the Chicago police “union.” Maybe that’s my sign tomorrow — Trump-endorsing Chicago cops go home — or something like — GTFO of Quebec, Fascists, I dunno. But then again, I’ll probably have a beer in my hand and I don’t need to make enemies. Now isn’t the time to be uppity. It’s only fascism and really, as we’ve discovered, lots of people actually like fascism. Maybe the organizers aren’t foolish afterall. They’re something else.
Maybe I’ll just give them the classic thumbs down.
