We lose an hour tonight; surely, the worst time for me to find myself arriving in Toronto at 00:40 and leaving at 7:55. The time change is the worst cultural marker that we have: a useless ritual that nearly nobody loves, based on the idea that no one wants to wake up in the dark (unless you must wake up in the dark anyway — we can’t make the sun pop up any earlier!)
And so by the time you read this, I have either made my calculations correctly and I am about to land back home, or I have missed my flight.
But who am I kidding? The only tiny bit of magic of this ritual was obliterated by the ubiquitous cell phone. The disorientation of waking up, not being totally sure what time it is, maybe calling the automatic time phone number to hear the lady tell you that it’s 8 AM, not 9 AM (or is it 9 AM, not 8 AM?) The guessing is gone. Our phones even automatically adjust our alarm clocks.
As I write this, my computer says that it’s 7:26 (or 19h26 as I have become accustomed to reading it). Now, that’s not actually true. It’s actually 5:26; my computer does not automatically recognize that I have changed time zones. My flight is at 6:30, I land at 10:40 or something, but really, it’s almost 1 AM and I will ricochet myself off of a Sheraton Hotel pillow.
Pilots have figured out how to tell time without these time zones but even they must contend with losing an hour tonight.
